Most of the small and lesser-known ski designers/builders now sell direct to consumers from their websites.  What is the future of small ski companies and retail stores?

i'd say it would be tough. it would be better if besides the website they use to sell their products, they also have a shop for their products. :)

While on-line stores are great...I really LIKE going to a shop and seeing racks of new skis I can touch, flex and handle...it's part of the fun....trouble is, how do you get shops to gamble on buying a few dozen pairs of little-known skis and taking up their rack space where "big name" brands could be?

Small companies have to use internet in order to :

- showing their products

- selling skis/boards

This is very tough to sell through retailers who are overwhelmed by brands.

Internet is the future for us, small companies.

However, we need to let the customer touch, test and see the product before buying.

And this is sometimes a real challenge to do that when you are a small company.

I really think that one of our own is on to something.  Phil has been pushing the idea of getting a small core of folks on skis like Hart to help push the brand.  Mount em w/ demos & have skiers be  'pros' not reps.  He tried it w/ Elan, but they were too big & too short sighted.

Most shops are worthless these days.  Internet & "media" word of mouth is far better.  I hope more is done with bright folks pushing skis in the indie manner.

For me personally I need to try on the skis and that's something I can't do when buying them online
